HR and the new normal

the new normal

By Lionel Layerle

After living with the pandemic for 1.5 years, we are finally moving towards the end, towards a new everyday life, towards the new normal. The pandemic is not over, but with a high degree of vaccination and declining infection rates, we can gradually look up and start planning what the new everyday work should look like.

Some are already back in the office, others are still in the home office, while others still have a hybrid solution. This will also be the case in the future. We see that the pandemic has affected workers in various ways.

Some have spent 18 months looking forward to returning to the office, while others have found that a home office is a good way to work. Most people want a hybrid solution, where they can get the best of both worlds.
If employees can choose where they want to work from, there is a lot you have to take into account, and an important question will be how managers should lead in the new normal. So, what will happen to HR in the new normal?

The office, home office, or hybrid office?

During the pandemic, it has become clear that HR does not exist for HR, but for the managers, for employees, for the people in the company. The importance of having good HR processes that work in an optimal way for your company, and the best HR system that supports your processes, could not have been clearer than when managers have had to lead digitally.

In the new normal, it can actually be even more challenging: If you have different models for where your employees will work from, managers must take this into account. Because how do you best follow up on someone who is in a home office, someone who is in a hybrid office and someone who is in the physical office in the best way?

Where should you start?

To make this happen, our clear recommendation is to start with your HR processes. Are they adapted to the new normal? If the answer is no, it's a good idea to go back to the drawing board. Once you have the processes in place, the next step is to take a look at your HR system. Does the system support the processes? If the answer is also no, it's time to take action.

You do this by choosing an HR system that facilitates good dialogue and that ensures that both managers and employees get their job done, in the best possible way, regardless of where they are located. By choosing an HR system that has the best digital solutions competence, and goal and employee development , you set the premise for continuous and productive dialogue between manager and employee.
