How to ensure good onboarding of new employees

Onboarding of new staff

The pandemic showed us the importance of good HR management - for absolutely everyone in the company. When managers have had to lead, hire and onboard digitally, it has created a breeding ground for new HR processes adapted to the company. Today, these solutions are established as hybrid work, the 'new normal'.

Onboarding involves the introduction and follow-up of the new employee during the first year. This will allow the employee to quickly familiarize themselves with work expectations, routines and tasks. So what is it really like to hire someone when the work requires a home office solution? How will the onboarding process work in the hybrid solution?

Hiring a colleague you may have only seen in a video meeting can be a challenge. Regardless of whether you're in the office, at home, or alternating between the two, it's incredibly important to come prepared for the onboarding process.

Tips for the onboarding process

Begin the process before start-up

From the moment the new employee signs the contract to standing in the stairwell of your office, half hesitating, it can take several months. Making good use of this time will make the onboarding process faster and smoother. This way, your new colleague will feel welcomed and cared for, and will be able to settle in more quickly.

Therefore, start the onboarding process as soon as the contract is signed. This way you can keep the new employee warm, for example with relevant information they can familiarize themselves with. Or maybe you have a digital induction course that the employee can attend before starting?

Have the practicalities in order for start-up

Mobile phones, PCs and access cards are common equipment that comes with the job. Make sure these are in place for the new employee's first day of work. Inform the employee of the meeting place and time, as well as who they can expect to meet. When the employee knows what to expect, they will be able to relax. At the same time, you'll help ensure a smooth transition into the new job. Once all the practicalities are in place, the new employee can settle into the new routine more quickly and easily.
